The best place to start when making your home more environmentally sustainable is with an eco friendly kitchen. The kitchen is the area of the house that uses the most water, electricity and resources and acts as a gathering place for family and friends. Ettitude has some simple, cost effective tips to create your own eco friendly kitchen.
Go meatless on Mondays
Choose one night a week to have a vegetarian meal. This simple switch has the same environmental impact as choosing to drive a hybrid car and there are plenty of yummy recipes available! Check out some of our favourites on Pintrest.
Change your cleaning products
Switch your current cleaning products to green, plant based cleaning products. Green cleaners reduce air pollution minimising allergies and don’t contain harsh chemicals that can be harmful to your health. Change your current tea towels to a Bamboo Waffle Tea Towel. Bamboo tea towels are up to four times more absorbent than cotton tea towels, are anti bacterial and are made and manufactured using more environmentally friendly means. As they are anti bacterial they will need to be washed far less frequently, and as they are more absorbent only one tea towel will be needed to dry all of your dishes.
Choose energy efficient appliances
In any eco friendly kitchen, the appliances should be energy efficient. If you’re shopping for a new kitchen appliance make sure to check out the energy star rating before purchasing to not only reduce your environmental footprint but also reduce your bills.
When food is wasted so are all of the resources used in its production, manufacturing and preparation. Composting your organic food waste can help to prevent greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging aerobic breakdown and reduce the amount of garden and kitchen waste going to landfill.
