Organic vs. Oeko-Tex Certified
If you read our last post you would have learnt that all Ettitude products are proudly Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified, ensuring that you have not only the dreamiest nights sleep but also the healthiest nights sleep. Did you know however, there is an important difference between whether a product can be labelled as Oeko-Tex certified vs Organic certified?
Despite what you may think, these labels mean different things and can cause so much confusion in the marketplace when deciding what are the best and safest products to buy for you and your family.
So what’s the difference?
The most simple way to explain this comes down to how the materials of the fabric are grown and manufactured. For materials to be labeled as certified organic the raw materials must be grown and farmed according to strict guidelines and without petroleum-based fertilisers, pesticides and synthetic products.
This is just the first step, however, the next level of certification is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 which is to do with how the raw materials are then processed. This considers factors such as the dye that is used, the sewing threads, linings, prints, and any non-textile accessories such as buttons included in the final product. If a product is labeled as Oeko-Tex certified it is completely free from harmful chemicals and safe for human use.
To attain Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, the fabric has been tested and certified to be free from harmful levels of more than 100 substances known to be harmful to human health.
A few things to know about Oeko-Tex testing:
- It is reviewed annually and completely voluntary.
- All testing is undergone by independent third party laboratories.
- The criteria are reviewed annually.
- Oeko-Tex is a global standard.
- All accountable ways harmful substances can enter the body are considered.
It is possible to buy products that are Organic certified but have not undergone the next level of certification making it Oeko-Tex certified and therefore not guaranteed 100% free from harmful chemicals, which, when it comes to products so closely in contact with your skin is an important factor to consider.
All Ettitude products have both the Organic certification for the raw bamboo material and the Oeko-Tex certification for the final product. They are not only the softest but also one of the most healthiest bedding choices on the today's market!
