Chemical Free Living in the Home
Living a tox-free lifestyle is a choice which is becoming more and more appealing. With plenty of information becoming readily available about the dangerous chemicals present in items we use in our home every day, it’s not worth taking the risk.
Luckily for us, it’s easy to make the switch and start living a more low-tox life! Here are our tips on chemical free living!
1. Buy Organic – We know; you’ve heard this before but there really is something to it! You will significantly reduce your intake of synthetic chemicals if you buy organic as often as possible. It makes sense, the cleaner the produce we ingest, the healthier our bodies will be. Avoid at all costs refined sugars, processed and canned foods.
2. Use non-toxic products in the home – It’s time to re-think the products you use to clean your home as they can cause serious health problems for you and your family. Toxic chemicals such as Ammonia, Bleach, Isopropanol and Hydraulic acid are common ingredients used which are damaging to your health. The wash off of these ingredients down our drains are also detrimental to the environment as they end up in our waterways affecting the ecosystem. The good news is you can create safe and homemade cleaning products. Try mixing vinegar and bicarb soda and water together for an effective surface spray or invest in green cleaning products which are readily available on the market.
3. Beauty and Personal Care Products – The skin is our largest organ. It makes sense to keep nasty chemicals far away. Ingredients to watch out for include Phthalates which is found in fragrances, hair products, skin lotions and nail polish, BHB & BHT found in moisturizers and Parabens which is found in a variety of cosmetic. This is just to name a few. We recommend using coconut oil, for anything and everything such as moisturizer, lip gloss or hair treatment!
4. Homewares – Keep your homewares clean. This includes researching how furniture has been treated and what materials have been used. Try using less plastic to store food rather opt for glass or other natural materials.
Invest in good quality organic bedding such as Bamboo Lyocell. Your body is in such close contact with your bedding every single day. Quite often chemicals such as formaldehyde are added to keep sheets wrinkle-free but this chemical is damaging to your health. Opt for organic bedding that is breathable and meets all certifications. Keeping your home chemical free can seem daunting at first but if you follow these tips and start off small you will start to see the benefits.
